How I Fell in Love With Day Hiking

It was 1987, and my husband and I were excited to go on our first trip together to Colorado. I’d been in love with the Rocky Mountains since I was a little girl. My parents had visited there before I was born, and I would often gaze at the pictures and postcards from their trip way back in the 1950s. Of course, by the time they took my sister and me there in the late 1970s, although some things were the same, a lot had changed.

So my husband and I set out on our road trip. We settled into our motel in Estes Park and planned our adventure. The first full day there, we headed up Fall River Road, a trek that is only possible between July and October because the road stays covered in snow and ice for most of the year. We were so excited to be in the mountains, taking in the scenery, that we stopped at every pullout along the way.
That’s how we found the Chapin Creek Trail. We were thrilled to discover we could actually walk into the wilderness to see things we couldn’t see from the road. Our parents had never done such things when we were growing up, so we had little to no knowledge of such adventures. Both sets of parents were make-good-time sort of travelers. They weren’t dawdlers. So the idea of getting out of the car and diving deeper into the woods was a brand new concept for us.

We started out and soon realized we were not prepared to venture into the woods. The wrong shoes. No water. We had no idea how long it would take to hike that particular trail. We were rookies. So we turned around and went back to the car with sad hearts.
When we finally made it all the way up Fall River Road to the summit of Fall River Pass, we found the Alpine Visitor Center; and to our delight, we discovered trail maps existed for the entire park. So when we drove back into Estes Park, we bought provisions (water and trail food) for our first hike. It was getting late in the afternoon by then, so we couldn’t do any trail that was very long. We chose a short hike to Alberta Falls in the Bear Lake area of the park for our first hiking experience.
The view from the top of the falls was gorgeous. We truly felt like we were on top of the world and closer to heaven. The view seemed sharper. The air smelled fresher. Our bodies experienced the feel-good tingle of exercise. We felt connected to ourselves, to nature, to our Creator. This was when we realized we couldn’t truly see and experience the wonders of the mountains in the seat of a car. There was a whole other world off the road and down a path.
We were hooked. The next day we got to Bear Lake earlier and hiked all the way to Emerald Lake. Now, we plan trips around the possibility of day hiking. I’ve included some pictures taken during the numerous hikes we’ve done. I hope these photos will inspire you to get out of the car and discover the beauty and adventure that exists only a few miles from the road.

Last Day in Wyoming

Colter Marina, Jackson Lake, Grand Teton National Park

It's my last day in Wyoming. No, not the going home day, but the last day I actually do something vacation-y.
It's a bittersweet day because although I enjoyed our trip immensely, I'm ready to go home. It feels like I’ve been gone forever, and it feels like I never want to sleep in a motel bed again. But the thing is, I’ll plan another trip for next summer on the way home, and I’ll plan it with enthusiasm. There will probably be mountains wherever I plan to go. That’s my thing.
The last vacation-y thing I did was taking a boat tour of Lake Jackson. It was a beautifully chilly morning cruise across the lake.
Our family gets one week of vacation a year, and the last day is always the day that the thought that it’s almost over for another year will linger in the back of my mind shadowing everything I do.
I’ve counted down to this day. On day one, I say to myself, “This is great. We are having so much fun, and we have six more days of vacation left.” It goes like that for several days, at least, until the mid-point of the vacation. Then, I begin the end of vacation litany. “This is great. We are having so much fun, but we only have two more days of vacation left.”

In seven days, I’ve seen six states: Louisiana, Texas, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. (Yes, there was some air travel involved, right between Texas and Utah. Have I mentioned how much I hate DFW Airport? No? Well, that’s another blog post.)
I’ve covered a lot of miles. I’ve taken a buttload of pictures, and I’ve gotten some terrific writing inspiration. Like, the hotel where we stayed the second through fourth nights has its very own ghost story, and the mist over the thermal pools in Yellowstone in the evening has given me some ghostly inspiration.

So now that I’m home, I’m hitting the writing hard again. I have new inspiration.
I'm finishing up a ghost story for a box set with five other authors. Watch for Mystic Passions coming soon.
I'm finishing up the last book of the River Road Haunted Hearts set. I don't have a cover for The Sweet Madness of Honeysuckle yet.
And I'm working on two other paranormal romantic suspense books: Second Sight and Oceans Apart.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Here it is halfway through another year, and I wonder where the months went and what have I accomplished so far this year. It’s been a busy year already. I knew it would be. The first four and a half months were spent doing tax returns for other people. I barely got mine filed on time. As an accountant, I find the thing I like doing least is my own accounting. I hate reconciling my bank account, and I detest doing my own taxes. I can do that for other people, but mine seems to languish. Truthfully, I haven’t reconciled my bank account in months. That’s really bad since I’ll roll my eyes when one of my clients does the same thing.

When I started thinking about all the stuff I’d have to take care of this year, I panicked. Will I have any time to do something fun?

After reflecting on everything I have to get done this year, my head starts to hurt. I need some down time, I tell myself. With a heavy sigh, my mind turns toward a few of my favorite things. (Thank you very much Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music.)

SO here it is. A list of a few of my favorite things (not necessarily in any kind of order):

1.     Tex-Mex food – I could seriously eat Tex-Mex three times a day. Here is a picture of my favorite cheese enchilada recipe.

You can find the recipe in  my original post about it here.

Inspiration, Where Are You?

In search of that elusive thing called inspiration. What sparks the imagination? Sometimes a tidbit of conversation catches my attention and starts the what ifs. Once, a comment on a news report started a plot line spinning in my head. Usually, I find it in the most obscure places, like a mountain road in Arkansas. I took a picture of an abandoned house there and a book jumped out of the scene. Occasionally, I resort to a writing prompt.

My family has ceased asking me about my odd looks.

"Are you mad, Momma?"
"No, I'm writing in my head."

"Honey, what are you smiling about?"
"Oh, just something I'm writing in my head."

"Mom, are you listening?"
"Sorry, son, I'm writing in my head."

Now...

"Are you writing in your head again?"

So here's my creative timeline...

You get the picture. I woke up this morning with a new plot line spinning in my head. My family will think I'm a zombie again!

So what sparks your imagination?
